DIVAS: From Stage To Screen
DIVAS is a four-woman singing show built around female-written songs, ranging from Cher to Shirley Basset, with individual solos and a four-piece band providing solid backing. The singing is very good, and the band behind them is more than decent.
The problem is energy. The venue was empty when I saw it, and the lack of an audience seemed to drain some of the momentum and cohesion from the room. That is not entirely the performers’ fault, but it was noticeable. The show could have used a few more people to get the energy up.
There is not much wrong with the basic ingredients. The voices are good, the musicians are capable, and the evening is enjoyable enough. It simply lacks the lift that would turn a decent cabaret into a properly exciting one.
Not bad overall. An enjoyable evening, if a little lacking in energy.
Runs 6–11 August, 14–19 August, 22–26 August and 28–30 August at 9:45pm.
